As a child, Cave was raised in a Methodist family and had a strong interest in literature and poetry. His love for music was inspired by his mother’s record collection which included Elvis Presley records and Johnny Cash albums. At the age of 15 he formed his first band “The Boys Next Door” which later evolved into “The Birthday Party” during his high school years.

Cave released his debut solo album From Her to Eternity in 1984 which featured darkly themed songs such as "Saint Huck" and "From Her To Eternity". This album established him as one of the most creative forces in alternative rock music. In 1985 he formed the group Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds who have released 13 studio albums since then including No More Shall We Part (2001), Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus (2004) and Skeleton Tree (2016).

In addition to writing music and performing live shows with his groups, Cave also wrote several books and screenplays including And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989) and Lawless (2012). He won an ARIA Award for Best Original Soundtrack Album for The Proposition (2005). Cave continues to write music today with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds releasing their latest album Ghosteen in 2019.
