Stephen John Nash OC OBC is a Canadian professional basketball coach and former player who most recently served as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association. He played 18 seasons in the NBA, where he was an eight-time All-Star and a seven-time All-NBA selection.
Steve Nash was born on February 7, 1974 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He grew up in Victoria, British Columbia and attended St. Michaels University School. Nash is a two time NBA MVP, eight-time NBA All-Star, and seven-time All-NBA selection. He has also won three consecutive league assists titles and holds the record for most assists in a single season (1,038).
Nash started playing basketball at the age of 12 after watching his older brother play. He eventually went on to play college basketball at Santa Clara University where he was twice named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. In 1996 he was drafted 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns and became an instant star with his creative passing skills and ability to make shots from long range. During his time with the Suns, Nash led them to three playoff appearances and was twice named NBA MVP in 2005 and 2006.
In 2012 he joined the Los Angeles Lakers but injuries limited him throughout his stay with the team. In 2015 he retired from professional basketball after 19 seasons in the league. Since then he has been involved in various philanthropic activities and is currently a consultant for both Canadian national teams as well as a special advisor for Golden State Warriors’ general manager Bob Myers.
