Lübeck's most distinctive profession, at more than four hundred times the global rate, is Ratsherr — councillor of the old free city — with pastors, merchants, and notaries close behind. The 17th century accounts for more than a tenth of the entire bench, a share no modern city approaches. Thomas Mann set Buddenbrooks here and Willy Brandt grew up on the opposite side of the same harbour.
