Alfredo James Pacino is an American actor. Considered one of the most influential actors of the 20th century, he has received numerous accolades: including an Academy Award, two Tony Awards, and two Primetime Emmy Awards, making him one of the few performers to have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting.
Al Pacino was born on April 25, 1940 in The Bronx, New York. He is the son of Italian immigrants Rose and Salvatore Pacino. His father left when Al was two years old, and his mother raised him with her parents in the South Bronx neighborhood. Pacino attended high school at Herbert H. Lehman High School before attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Pacino began his acting career in 1967, appearing off-Broadway in a production of Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? This led to many Broadway roles including The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel and American Buffalo. In 1972, he made his film debut with The Godfather, which earned him an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Scent of a Woman in 1993.
Throughout his career, Pacino has been recognized as one of the greatest actors of all time, earning numerous awards and nominations including numerous Golden Globe Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards and Tony Awards. He is also well known for his starring roles in films such as Scarface (1983), Serpico (1973) and Dog Day Afternoon (1975). He received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2001 and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.
