Andrew Russell Garfield was born on August 20, 1983, in Los Angeles, California. He is of American and British-Jewish ancestry, with his English great-grandfather having immigrated to the United States from Lithuania. He attended Priory Preparatory School in Banstead and then went on to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama at the University of London. 

    Garfield made his feature film debut in 2007's "Lions for Lambs," and went on to star in other films such as "The Social Network" (2010), "Never Let Me Go" (2010), "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) and its sequel (2014). He also starred in the acclaimed drama "99 Homes" (2015) and appeared opposite Ryan Reynolds in the sci-fi adventure "Life" (2017). In 2018, he was seen in the romantic drama "Under the Silver Lake," and he voiced a character in Wes Anderson's stop-motion animation feature "Isle of Dogs." 

    On television, Garfield starred in BBC mini-series adaptations of Charles Dickens' novels "The Red Riding Trilogy" (2009) and "Great Expectations" (2011). He also earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play for his performance as Prior Walter in a Broadway revival of Tony Kushner's two-part play "Angels in America" (2018).
