She attended Yale University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in African-American studies and graduated cum laude.

Bassett began her career as an actress in the late 1980s with small roles in television shows such as “The Cosby Show” and “A Different World”. In 1993, she earned critical acclaim for her role as Tina Turner in the film “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. She went on to star in movies such as “Waiting to Exhale” (1995), “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” (1998), and “Malcolm X” (1992). She also starred in the hit television series “ER” from 1994 to 1999.

In recent years, Bassett has continued to appear on television shows like “American Horror Story” and films like Black Panther (2018). She is an advocate for health awareness and education about HIV/AIDS through organizations such as The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) and UNICEF.
