Halle Maria Berry was born on August 14, 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio. She is an American actress and former fashion model. Her mother, Judith Ann Hawkins, is a psychiatric nurse, and her father Jerome Jesse Berry is a former hospital attendant. Halle has one sister named Heidi Berry-Henderson.

Berry attended Bedford High School and graduated in 1984. She then attended Cuyahoga Community College before transferring to and graduating from Cleveland's Marshall University with a degree in broadcast journalism.

In 1989, Berry won the Miss Ohio USA beauty pageant and went on to win the Miss USA crown in 1986. In 1991, she made her screen debut in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever" and was later cast as Storm in Fox's superhero drama “X-Men” (2000).

Berry received critical acclaim for the role of Leticia Musgrove in the 2001 drama “Monster’s Ball” which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress – making her the first African American woman to win an Oscar for a leading role. After that she starred in such films as “Die Another Day” (2002), “Gothika” (2003), “Catwoman” (2004) and “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006).

In addition to acting, she also serves as executive producer on several television projects including CBS' “Extant” (2014–15). In 2008, Berry was ranked No. 1 on People magazine's list of 'Most Beautiful Women'. She continues to act regularly appearing on TV shows like “Lethal Weapon” (2016–19) and movies such as John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019).
