Christopher D'Olier Reeve was an American actor, best known for playing the title character in the film Superman and three sequels. Born in New York City and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Reeve discovered a passion for acting and the theater at the age of nine.
Christopher Reeve was born on September 25, 1952, in New York City. He was the son of Barbara and Franklin Reeve. His father was a teacher while his mother worked as a journalist. He had two siblings, Benjamin and Alexandra. As a young boy, he developed an interest in acting and enrolled at Cornell University to pursue a degree in theater.
Reeve made his debut on Broadway with the play “A Matter of Gravity” before appearing in several television shows such as “Love of Life” and “The Doctors”. His film debut came in 1978 when he starred as Clark Kent/Superman in the blockbuster hit “Superman” directed by Richard Donner. The movie became an instant success and catapulted Reeve to stardom making him one of Hollywood's most sought-after leading men. He reprised his role as Superman for three more movies which earned him greater recognition worldwide.
In 1995, Reeve suffered a tragic accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down due to injuries sustained during horse riding competition. Despite his physical limitations, Reeve continued to act in numerous films including “Above Suspicion” and “Noises Off” both released posthumously after his death in 2004 due to complications related to heart failure caused by sepsis.
Reeve also dedicated much of his time and effort advocating for stem cell research and spinal cord injury awareness until his death at the age of 52. He was inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 2007 and received posthumous honors including the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
