David Lee Roth, born October 10th 1954, is an American rock singer, songwriter and actor. He rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the band Van Halen from 1974-1985, and then again from 2006-2007. Roth is also known for his successful solo career with popular hits like "Just a Gigolo", "California Girls" and "Jump".

Roth was born in Bloomington, Indiana to Dr. Nathan and Sibyl Roth. He grew up in a Jewish family and was raised in the city's Sinai Temple. His father was an ophthalmologist who served in World War II as a medic and later founded Eye Care Centers of America. His mother was a homemaker who worked with displaced persons after World War II, helping them find jobs and homes in America.

Roth started singing at an early age and eventually went on to form his first band called “The Red Ball Jets” when he was 15 years old. After graduating high school, he attended Pasadena City College before enrolling at the University of California, Berkeley where he studied English Literature. In 1974, Roth joined Van Halen as their lead vocalist where they released classic albums such as Van Halen (1978), Women And Children First (1980) and 1984 (1984). Following the success of these albums, Roth left Van Halen in 1985 to pursue a successful solo career which included tours with bands like KISS and Aerosmith as well as his own solo shows around the world. In 2006, he rejoined Van Halen until 2007 when he decided to focus on his solo career once again. Throughout his long career, Roth has sold over 100 million records worldwide making him one of the most successful rock singers of all time.
