She was raised by parents William and Lucille Davis. Geena attended Wareham High School, where she enjoyed playing sports such as basketball and softball. After graduating from high school, she studied drama at Boston University for two years before dropping out to pursue an acting career.

    Davis began her acting career in 1982 with a small role in the film Tootsie. She then went on to appear in other films such as The Fly (1986), Beetlejuice (1988), and Quick Change (1990). In 1988, Davis earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Accidental Tourist. 

In 1991, Davis starred in the hit movie Thelma & Louise which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. In 1992, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the movie Thelma & Louise. During the 1990s, Davis also appeared in several hit films such as Hero (1992), Speechless (1994), and Cutthroat Island (1995). 

In 2002, Davis founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media which strives to reduce gender stereotypes seen in media targeting children 11 years old or younger. Since then she has become a vocal advocate for gender equality both on and off-screen. She has also appeared in television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy (2005) and Commander in Chief (2005-2006). In recent years she has returned to films with roles in Marjorie Prime (2017) and Black Panther (2018).
