Gerard Arthur Way was born on April 9, 1977 in Summit, New Jersey. He is an American singer, songwriter and comic book writer who is best known as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock band My Chemical Romance. Gerard grew up in Belleville, NJ where he attended Belleville High School for a time before transferring to Kearny High School and graduating in 1995.

Gerard began playing music in high school when his brother Mikey introduced him to punk rock. In 1994, after graduating from high school, he formed a band called My Chemical Romance with former classmates Ray Toro, Matt Pelissier, and Mikey Way. The group released their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002 and it received critical acclaim from music critics. The follow-up album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was released two years later and became a hit with fans around the world due to its dark themes and emo sound. The band went on to release four more albums before going on hiatus in 2013.

In addition to his musical career, Gerard also wrote comic books such as The Umbrella Academy which was adapted into a Netflix series starring Ellen Page in 2019. He has also written several short stories including "The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys" and "Cobwebs". Gerard married Lindsey Ann Ballato in 2007 and they have one daughter together named Bandit Lee Way who was born in 2009.
