Jack Hody Johnson is an American singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and former professional surfer. Johnson is known primarily for his work in the soft rock and acoustic pop genres. In 2001, he achieved commercial success after the release of his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales.
Jack Johnson was born on May 18, 1975 in North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii. He grew up in a musical family and began playing guitar at the age of 14. He also attended the University of California Santa Barbara before he started his career as a professional musician.
Johnson's career was launched when he released his debut album “Brushfire Fairytales” in 2001. The album was an immediate success, debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart and staying there for several weeks. It eventually went platinum and launched two popular singles, “Flake” and “Inaudible Melodies”.
In 2003 he released his second album “On and On” which again debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, reaching number 3 and staying on the chart for over two years. This album spawned two hit singles, “The Horizon Has Been Defeated” and “Taylor”. In 2005 he released his third album entitled “In Between Dreams” which is considered by many to be his best work yet. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold over four million copies worldwide since then. The lead single from this album, “Sitting Waiting Wishing”, reached number 5 on Billboard's Hot 100 list.
Jack Johnson has continued to release music throughout his career with five more albums being released since 2005. Along with being a successful musician, Johnson is also an avid surfer and environmentalist who founded the Kokua Hawaii Foundation which works to promote environmental education in Hawaii's schools.
