Melissa Arnette Elliott, known professionally as Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, was born on July 1, 1971 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She is an American rapper, singer-songwriter and record producer. Her zodiac sign is Cancer and her ethnicity is African-American. 

At the age of four, she started performing with the family vocal group, Sista. As a teenager, she attended Woodrow Wilson High School and took part in several rap competitions while also working at McDonald's. After graduating from high school in 1989, she moved to New York City to pursue a music career.

In 1992, Elliott released her debut album Supa Dupa Fly to critical acclaim. The success of singles like "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" and "Sock It 2 Me" made her one of the most successful female rappers of that time. She then followed up with albums such as Da Real World (1999) and Miss E…So Addictive (2001). In 2001 she released one of her most successful singles to date: "Get Ur Freak On".

In 2003, Elliott won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance for her song "Scream a.k.a Itchin'". Later that year she released her fourth studio album Under Construction which featured the hit single "Work It". Her fifth album The Cookbook was released in 2005 and included hits like "Lose Control" and "Teary Eyed". In 2006 Elliot received two more Grammy Awards for Best Short Form Music Video for "Lose Control" and Best Rap Song for "Shake Your Pom Pom." 

Elliott's sixth studio album Block Party was released in 2008 and featured collaborations with artists such as Lil Wayne and T-Pain. Throughout her career she has collaborated with many other artists including Justin Timberlake and Ciara on tracks like “Carry Out” (2009) and “Nothing But Trouble” (2015). In 2019 she made history when she became the first female hip hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
