Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. She is the daughter of Gerald and Kate Hathaway, both of whom were lawyers. Anne had an older brother Michael, who passed away in 2016. Hathaway is of Irish and French descent.

Hathaway first acted in high school plays, but it wasn't until she attended Vassar College that she truly began to pursue a career in acting. After graduating from college with a degree in English Literature, Hathaway moved to New York City and got her first big break when she was cast as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries (2001).

Her performance earned her critical acclaim and several award nominations, including a BAFTA nomination for "Best Actress In A Leading Role". This set off a chain reaction of successful roles for Hathaway—including parts in Ella Enchanted (2004), Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Becoming Jane (2007). With each role she showed off her versatility as an actress and continued to garner praise from critics.

In 2008 Hathaway starred alongside Meryl Streep in the movie version of the musical comedy classic Mamma Mia! Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress In A Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. In 2012 she appeared alongside Hugh Jackman in Les Misérables and won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Fantine.
