Dustin Hoffman was born on August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Harry Hoffman and Lillian Gold. His father was a furniture salesman and his mother was an office clerk. Hoffman attended Santa Monica City College before transferring to the Pasadena Playhouse.

Hoffman made his stage debut in 1957 in 'The Journey of the Fifth Horse.' He then moved to New York City and appeared in off-Broadway plays such as 'Eh?' and 'Harry, Noon and Night.' In 1966, he debuted on Broadway in 'Jimmy Shine.' After appearing on television shows such as 'Naked City' and 'The Defenders,' Hoffman got his breakthrough role as Benjamin Braddock in 1967's 'The Graduate.' The film earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Hoffman went on to appear in films such as 'Midnight Cowboy' (1969), 'Kramer vs. Kramer' (1979) and 'Tootsie' (1982). He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the latter film. Other notable films include ‘Rain Man’ (1988) and ‘Wag the Dog’ (1997). He also starred alongside Robert De Niro in ‘Marathon Man’ (1976), ‘Straw Dogs’ (1971) and ‘Little Big Man’ (1970). 

Hoffman has since continued to work steadily, appearing in films such as ‘Meet the Fockers’ (2004), ‘Stranger Than Fiction’(2006) and ‘Quartet’ (2012). In 2015, he appeared alongside Meryl Streep in the drama ‘The Meyerowitz Stories.’
