Elisabeth Judson Shue was born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware. She is an American actress who has appeared in numerous films and television series throughout her career. She is best known for her roles in the films The Karate Kid (1984), Back to the Future Part II (1989), Cocktail (1988), Adventures in Babysitting (1987) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995). 

Shue was raised in South Orange, New Jersey by her father, a lawyer, and mother, a vice president of the Chemical Bank Corporation. She attended Columbia High School where she excelled at academics and field hockey. She later attended Wellesley College before transferring to Harvard University where she earned a degree in government.

In 1984 Shue made her film debut with The Karate Kid for which she won a Young Artist Award for Best Young Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Fantasy. Following this success, she had steady work as an actress appearing in films such as Adventures in Babysitting (1987), Cocktail (1988), Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Heart and Souls (1993). Her breakthrough role was as Sera in the 1995 independent drama Leaving Las Vegas for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. 

In 1997 Shue starred alongside Nicolas Cage, Meg Ryan and Dennis Hopper in The Rainmaker directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Other notable performances include Hollow Man (2000) and Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (2005). In addition to her film work, Shue also appears regularly on television series such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, House M.D., Numb3rs and Grey's Anatomy.
