Jermaine Lamar Cole, better known by his stage name J. Cole, was born on January 28, 1985 in Frankfurt, Germany. His father, a former soldier and drill sergeant in the United States Army, was stationed there at the time of his birth. When he was 8 years old his family moved back to Fayetteville, North Carolina where he grew up. He first developed an interest in hip-hop music while attending Terry Sanford High School and started rapping when he was 12 years old.

In 2007, J. Cole received a basketball scholarship to St. John's University in New York City but later chose to transfer to the New School after two years due to lack of interest in college life. While at the New School he began working with a producer named Jay-Z and soon after released his debut mix tape “The Come Up” which garnered him much attention from local hip hop fans and industry professionals alike. In 2009 he signed with Jay-Z's label Roc Nation and released his second mixtape “The Warm Up” in 2010.

His debut studio album “Cole World: The Sideline Story” was released in 2011 and debuted at number one on US Billboard 200 selling over 200,000 copies its first week. Since then J Cole has released 3 additional albums all of which have been critically acclaimed and certified platinum or gold by RIAA. He has also collaborated with various other artists such as Drake, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar among others throughout his career garnering multiple Grammy nominations along the way including 1 win for Best Rap Album for 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014).
