About

Joe Cocker, born John Robert Cocker on May 20, 1944 in Sheffield, England, was a British rock/blues singer best known for his hit singles "You Are So Beautiful" and "Up Where We Belong." His career began in the early 1960s when he started singing in local pubs and clubs. He released his debut album, With A Little Help From My Friends, in 1969 and it quickly became a hit. The title track from the album was a cover of The Beatles song and it rose to number one on the U.S. singles chart.

Cocker's popularity continued to grow through the 1970s with hits such as "The Letter," "Delta Lady," and "You Are So Beautiful." His voice was met with critical acclaim for its soulful sound and powerful delivery. In 1982 he collaborated with Jennifer Warnes on the song "Up Where We Belong," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

In the 1990s Cocker toured extensively around the world and released several albums including Night Calls (1992), Have A Little Faith (1994) and Organic (1996). In 2003 he was awarded an OBE (Order of The British Empire) for services to music. He continued touring until shortly before his death on December 22, 2014 at age 70 due to lung cancer. Joe Cocker's influence is still felt today by many modern singers who cite him as an inspiration for their own work.
