Karen Sheila Gillan was born on November 28, 1987, in Inverness, Scotland. She is the only child of Marie and John Gillan, both of whom are employed in the hotel industry.

Gillan attended the independent Langholm Academy in Dumfries and Galloway before enrolling at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London at age 16. After completing her studies and appearing in several short films, she made her professional acting debut in a 2005 episode of Rebus.

In 2009, she was cast as Amy Pond in the long-running British sci-fi series Doctor Who. Her performance as the companion to Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor earned her critical acclaim as well as a National Television Award for Best Drama Performance in 2011. Subsequently, Gillan starred on the small screen in The Kevin Bishop Show (2010), We'll Take Manhattan (2012) and The Sinbad Show (2012).

Gillan made the leap to feature films with an appearance in 2010's Outcast and followed up with roles that included appearances in Not Another Happy Ending (2013), Oculus (2013) and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). She also starred as Nebula opposite Chris Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). That same year, Gillan wrote and directed The Party's Just Beginning.

In 2018, she appeared alongside Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and reprised her role as Nebula for Avengers: Infinity War.
