Mitski Miyawaki, known professionally by the mononym Mitski, is a Japanese-born American singer-songwriter. Mitski self-released her first two albums, Lush and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business, while studying studio composition at Purchase College's Conservatory of Music.
Mitski Miyawaki, better known simply as Mitski, is a Japanese-American singer-songwriter born in Sendai, Japan on September 27th, 1990. She was raised in New York City and studied at Purchase College’s Conservatory of Music. After graduating college she worked odd jobs while writing music and performing live shows around the US.
Mitski’s musical style often blends elements of indie rock with traditional folk influences from her mother’s side of the family. Her debut album “Lush” was released in 2012 and was followed by “Bury Me at Makeout Creek” in 2014 which saw more success with critics. In 2016 she released her third album “Puberty 2” to critical acclaim which debuted at No. 28 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 2018 Mitski released her fourth album “Be the Cowboy” which debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart and featured singles such as “Nobody”, “Geyser”, and “Me and My Husband”. The album won praise from critics for its poignant lyricism, dreamy production and Mitski’s dynamic guitar playing.
Mitski has been praised for her songwriting ability and has been compared to acts such as Cat Power and PJ Harvey. Her work has also appeared frequently in films such as Lady Bird (2017) and Eighth Grade (2018).
