Robert James Smith is an English musician. He is the lead singer, guitarist, primary songwriter, and only continuous member of the rock band the Cure, which he co-founded in 1978.
Robert Smith was born in England on April 21, 1959. His zodiac sign is Taurus and his ethnicity is English. He grew up in Crawley, West Sussex, and attended St. Wilfrid’s Roman Catholic School and then Notre Dame Middle School. At the age of 17, he formed a band called Malice with his friends Michael Dempsey and Laurence Tolhurst and they released their first single in 1978.
In 1979, Smith joined forces with Simon Gallup and Matthieu Hartley to form The Cure. They released their debut album “Three Imaginary Boys” in 1979 and their follow-up album “Seventeen Seconds” in 1980. Throughout the decade, The Cure released many successful albums including “Pornography” (1982), “The Head on the Door” (1985), “Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me” (1987) and “Disintegration” (1989). During this time, Smith also collaborated with Siouxsie & The Banshees for their 1982 single "The Lord's Prayer".
In 1992, Smith released his first solo album titled “Platinum Collection” which was a compilation of several tracks from The Cure's back catalogue as well as some new material. He then went on to release three more solo albums: “Mixed Up” (1990), “Wild Mood Swings” (1996) and “Bloodflowers” (2000). In 2004, he reunited with The Cure for a world tour which lasted until 2008 when they played their final show together at London's Wembley Stadium
Throughout his career, Smith has received countless awards including six NME Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Brit Awards and an Ivor Novello Award. He has been inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Cure in 2019 as well as the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2020. He remains one of the most influential figures in rock music today.
