At the age of sixteen, she dropped out of school to pursue a career in music. She then moved to Los Angeles where she formed Hole in 1989 with Eric Erlandson on guitar, Jill Emery on bass, and Caroline Rue on drums. The band released their debut album "Pretty On The Inside" in 1991 which was acclaimed by critics for its raw energy and punk rock sound. In 1995, Hole released their second album "Live Through This" which featured singles such as "Violet" and "Miss World". The album received critical acclaim and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Love also pursued a solo career releasing her debut solo album "America's Sweetheart" in 2004 which included songs such as "Mono" and "Hold On To Me". In 2012, she collaborated with Lana Del Rey for the single "You Know My Name". She has also appeared in films such as Basquiat (1996), Man on the Moon (1999), Trapped (2002) and Sons of Anarchy (2013).
