He is the son of Joe Odom and Cathy Mercer, and he has three siblings. At age 12, his father left the family and his mother struggled to care for them. Odom attended Christ The King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens, where he joined their basketball team. During this time, he was named Parade All-American Second Team and was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers as the fourth overall pick in the 1999 NBA Draft.

In 2000, he was awarded Rookie of The Year honors and made his first All-Rookie Team selection. In 2001, he set career highs in assists per game (3.7) and rebounds per game (10). However, due to personal issues that surfaced during 2013–14 season with Dallas Mavericks, Odom played only four games before being released from the team on April 9th 2014. After a brief stint overseas with Laboral Kutxa Baskonia of Spain's ACB League in 2015, Odom announced his retirement from professional basketball in July 2017.
