Russell Westbrook III is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. A member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, he is a nine-time NBA All-Star and earned the NBA Most Valuable Player Award for the 2016–17 season.
Russell Westbrook was born on November 12, 1988 in Long Beach, California. He has an older brother named Raynard, and his parents are Russell Sr. and Shannon Westbrook. He attended Leuzinger High School in Lawndale, California where he was a three-time All-Conference selection in basketball and also ran track. After high school, he attended UCLA, where he was a consensus All-American selection for two years before being drafted 4th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2008 NBA Draft.
Westbrook had an immediate impact with the Thunder and quickly became one of the top point guards in the league. In 2009-10, his first full season as a starter, he led the team to 50 wins and won the NBA's Rookie of the Year Award. The following season he made his first All-Star Game appearance and helped lead the Thunder to their first ever Finals appearance. Over his career with OKC, Westbrook earned eight All-Star selections, two scoring titles (2011–12 & 2016–17), and an MVP award (2017).
In 2017 Westbrook made history by becoming only the second player in NBA history to average a triple double over an entire season (Oscar Robertson was the other). During that same season he broke Robertson's single season record of 42 triple doubles while leading OKC back to the playoffs. After 11 seasons with OKC, Westbrook was traded to Houston during the 2019 offseason where he currently plays alongside James Harden.
