About

Steve Perry was born on January 22, 1949 in Hanford, California. He is an American rock singer, songwriter and record producer who gained fame as the lead vocalist for the rock band Journey from 1977 to 1987 and again from 1995 to 1998.

Perry began his musical career in 1972 when he formed a local band called Pieces. The group performed at various venues in Northern California. In 1975, Perry joined another local band called Alien Project. With this group, he recorded a demo tape which garnered attention from major record labels.

In 1977, Perry joined Journey and became their lead vocalist and frontman. With them, he recorded nine studio albums which achieved great success in the United States, Europe and South America. During his time with Journey, their songs “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Open Arms” are two of the best-selling singles of all time. In 1987, Perry left the band due to creative differences but rejoined them briefly in 1995 before departing again in 1998.

Since then, Perry has released two solo albums (Street Talk (1984) and For The Love Of Strange Medicine (1994)) both of which have been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). He has also collaborated with other artists such as Sammy Hagar and Neal Schon on a series of projects over the years.

In 2016, Perry was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Journey in recognition of his contributions to music during his tenure with the band.
